How CoolSculpting works

CoolSculpting is a state-of-the-art alternative to the mechanical removal of fat (liposuction). However, unlike other non-surgical fat reducing treatments that use heat to melt fat cells, CoolSculpting uses a unique cooling technology to target and destroy fat cells. The cool temperatures only affect fatty tissue, leaving the surrounding tissue unharmed. Once destroyed, the body discards the dead fat cells, eliminating them via its own waste processing mechanism. The elimination process happens gradually, over a period of several weeks. As the cells are swept away, the treated area becomes less bulky. CoolSculpting is most commonly applied to the abdominals, back, and thighs.

Treatment overview

A CoolSculpting treatment at our Novato, California office is a straightforward outpatient procedure that does not require general anesthesia or incisions. During the treatment, cooling plates are placed on the areas of concern. The cold from the the plates penetrates the skin and reaches the fat cells, which are vulnerable to the specific temperature being emitted by the device. Patients will feel an intense cold sensation, accompanied by some pressure. This sensation is temporary. For most patients, the treatment is well-tolerated and does not cause serious discomfort.

A treatment can last one to three hours. The total time needed to complete the treatment will vary, depending on the patient and the area being treated. Multiple treatments may be necessary to realize optimal results. If additional treatments are needed, it is usually recommended that they be scheduled about 4-6 weeks apart.

Side effects and recovery

After a CoolSculpting treatment, most patients do not require a recovery period and can typically expect to return to normal routines without taking any downtime. Patients may experience some temporary side effects, such as minor bruising, redness tenderness, and numbness in the treated area. Typically, these side effects are not debilitating and will subside in a matter of days.

Results

CoolSculpting prompts the body to flush out destroyed fat cells, a process that unfolds over a period of several weeks. Some patients may see visible improvements in a few weeks, but the most dramatic improvement is typically seen after about 8 weeks. It can take up to four months to see the full effect. Outcomes may vary, depending on the individual patient.
