Fat Injections

As we age, our bodies begin to lose the precious substances that keep our facial tissue plump and youthful. Diminished reserves of fat and collagen cause the skin to appear depleted, particularly under the eyes and in the midface region. Replacing lost volume is one of the best ways to counteract the effects of aging. Fat injections can help fill in sunken areas, rejuvenating the skin and giving it renewed vibrancy.

Safe and effective, a fat injection procedure is a unique technique that can be used alone or as part of a larger rejuvenation plan. We often recommend fat injections to patients who wish to restore volume, smooth out creases and other imperfections, and improve hollows under the eyes. Our specialists expertly perform fat injections at our Novato, CA location, helping our patients realize a refreshed appearance.

How Kybella works

Fat injections use a patient’s own fat to instantly add volume and enhance the appearance of the skin. Like synthetic dermal fillers, a fat injection is an additive procedure, providing the skin with a boost. The difference is the fat is derived from the patient’s own body, purified, and transferred to the treatment site. Fat injections can be used to augment thin lips, improve depressed scars, and lift the cheeks. The procedure can also be used on other areas the body, such as the hands.

Treatment overview

The first step of a fat injection procedure is to harvest fat cells from another part of the body, such as the abdomen. Once the fat is removed via a needle or liposuction, it is purified in a centrifuge. The purified fat is then transferred to the treatment area via injections with a fine needle. Typically, a fat injection procedure can be done in under an hour. The precise time needed will depend on the area being treated and the condition of the skin.

Side effects and recovery

After fat injections, the face may appear swollen. This swelling will go down in about a day as the body adjusts to the injected fat. Because fat injections rely on patient’s own fat cells, the procedure is highly tolerated and does not carry any serious risks of adverse reactions. If liposuction was used to extract the fat from the donor site, patients may experience swelling, bruising, and tenderness. These symptoms will generally improve in a few days.

Results

Most patients can see visible improvement immediately after a fat injection treatment. Once the initial swelling has subsided, patients will be able to see the final result Over time, the injected fat is reabsorbed by the body. Results generally last from about 3 to 6 months, but individual outcomes will vary from patient to patient. Periodic touch ups are recommended to maintain optimal results and ongoing benefits.
